The Bradford Exchange is global direct to consumer product marketing organization.  

We are hiring a Product Development Team Lead!

 

Identify, develop and evaluate ideas and themes for various collectible figural and outdoor products for various licensed and non-licensed properties.  Research competitive and related industries to develop concepts; prepare and present new product concepts to senior management including costs/margins. Manage projects from conception to approved production stages. May supervise and/or train junior level product development staff.

Responsibilities

Ideation and Concept Development:

  • Lead ideation sessions with team members to generate new product series concepts.
  • Active participation in weekly ideation meetings.
  • Present 10-15 new concepts with focus company budget requirements each month for approval by senior management. This includes the concept, competitive and related industries, and company research references, mockup/sketches as needed, and data on trends.

Product Development Management & Administration Outstanding Productivity:

  • Routinely deliver outstanding execution that result in winning products and ideas.
  • Develop 15-20 profitable contribution programs to drive sales and grow the business.
  • Manage a minimum of 80 + product skus. More if no direct reports.
  • Manage efficiently ongoing series extensions including all front and back-end art/sculptures to scheduled production time-lines.
  • Self-motivated and exceptional time management taking ownership to meeting deadlines for self and team.
  • Over deliver in commitments and deadlines while encouraging others to succeed.
  • Update and manage product development information database and schedules to meet advertising, production, and marketing deadlines and for review with Sr. Management.
  • Work with design teams, production teams, and outside vendors, and Sourcing team to develop final prototypes at the appropriate margin guidelines.
  • Work with Product Production and Vendors to ensure accurate COGs, acceptable production time-lines, and any required manufacturing vendor follow through on manufacturing and production samples.
  • Process and Approve artist/vendor invoices.
  • Work with Marketing and Advertising teams on product promotions and provide positive art-direction to drive sales.

LEADS Engagement:

    • Hire, supervise, train, motivate, mentor, coach and develop junior product development staff, as applicable.
    • Responsible for performance reviews and compensation guidelines, and on-going development feedback.
    • Actively look for opportunities to build & lead partnerships—organizes, manages, follow through with results.
    • Develop ideas that drive corporate and team initiatives.
    • Organize Team Events promoting high morale.
    • Lead Change—Solution Oriented that drives change to positive impact.
    • Display and emulate leadership characteristics, values and qualities in all communication and dealings.
    • Active participation in weekly product development meetings.
    • Develop strong working relationships with artists, sculptors, and licensors to meet business objectives – determine and work with appropriate artists/sculptors and art style to commission and direct sketches, and final artwork/sculpts.
    • Work with licensing and art acquisition regarding artist selection, portfolios, new brands, licenses and contracts.
    • Provide detailed and precise written/verbal critiques at various stages throughout development.
    • Manage development costs and speculative art accounts.
    • Provide precise written critiques at various stages throughout development when communicating with overseas vendors.
    • Strong negotiation skills.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • BA or BFA degree in Fine/Studio Arts, Art History, Illustration, Product Design, Sculpture or an art related field.
  • 10-15 years’ experience in product development/product design, preferably in the giftware/collectibles industry.
  • Direct marketing experience (catalog environment) and/or marketing and manufacturing knowledge of the giftware/collectibles industry.
  • Must have a creative background – proven experience in idea generation, theme oriented products.
  • Strong leadership skills; 5 years’ previous supervisory/management experience.
  • Positive and professional attitude.
  • Exceptional time management and ability to multi-task requiring little follow up from upper management.
  • Self-motivated and able to inspire and motivate others.
  • Art directing/critiquing experience; ability to give clear high level art direction; ability to identify “aesthetically pleasing” products, and accept and provide product critiques.
  • A strong sense of color, design and composition is essential.
  • Exposure to working with different types of materials – resins, plastics, glass, metals, fabrics, woods, 3D.
  • Ability to manage projects from conception to product stage; ability to manage costs and budgets
  • MAC/PC skills including Photoshop, Illustrator, Word, Excel, databases.
  • Marketing and manufacturing knowledge of giftware/ collectibles.
  • Very skilled at contract negotiations.
  • Direct marketing/direct response experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; excellent presentation skills.
  • Ability to work and troubleshoot in an extremely fast paced environment.
  • Must be organized and detail oriented with superior multi-tasking skills.
  • Must have initiative and want to work with minimal direction; be proactive in driving the direction of our development efforts.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BFA – Illustration, Product Design, Sculpture
  • BA with emphasis in direct marketing/direct response
  • Supervisory skills a plus
  • PhotoShop
  • Networked with freelance artists and sculptors
